How to create a Quiz in Quizizz!

Hi!

In this opportunity, we are going to see how to create a quiz in the app I previously talked about: Quizizz

First of all, it is important that you remember that you can use a pre-made quiz (that is to say a quiz that someone else has already made). If you don't have much time, I would recommend you to browse those quizes, and see if there's anything that fits your needs. To do this, you have to simply enter your Quizizz account, and on the top of the home page you will see a purple bar. In the middle of it, it will read "search". Click on it and type key words of what you expect to find. For example, if you want to assess your students on their use of Present simple, type "present simple" and hit on enter. Now, you should be able to see some quizes and lessons about the present simple. If you place the cursor on any of them, you will see a preview of the quiz on the right side of your screen (to check whether it will be useful for your or not). Whatsmore, if you click on any of the quizes shown, you will be able to check all of the content (including the correct answers), assign the quiz as a homework, use it as live, or edit it.

Mmm... so, I can edit a pre-made quiz?

Exaclty! If you see a quiz that more or less fits your needs, but there's something extra or something missing, you can just edit it! In that way, you won't have to do all the work, but just a little!

Ok, then, to edit a pre-made quiz, you have to click on "copy and edit". On your screen you will see the whole quiz. Next to each question it will appear a button that reads "edit". If you click on it, you will be able to make any necessary change to THAT section in particular. What do I mean by "any necessary change"? Well, you can change the type of activity that section is (multiple choice, checkbox, fill-in-the-blank, open ended or poll), or you can just change minor aspects like the time limit, the rubric, the answers, add or delete media from the rubric or the answers, etc. To save your changes, click on "save". To save the whole edited file, click on "publish" and your file will be saved in "my library".  Go to "my library", click on the quiz, and decide whether you want to assign it as a homework (that is setting a deadline for students to complete the quiz) or have your students completing the quiz live (student or teacher paced).

I want to create my own quiz right from scratch!

Ok! If you are up for the challenge, then follow these steps!

  • First, enter your quizziz account. On the left side of your screen reads “create”, click on it; then, click on “quiz”.
  • Write your quiz’s name like "Present simple" and choose the subjects that it involves, such as, English and Fun. Click on "next".
  • Choose what type of activity you want to create:
    • a multiple choice (an activity where only one answer is correct
    • a checkbox (an activity where more than an answer is correct)
    •  a fill-in-the-blank (an activity where students can type the answer and if it matches EXACTLY the way you have provided the answer, is counted as correct)
    •  a poll (an ungraded activity, no matter the option students choose, in your report they will appear as correct)
    • and an open ended activity (this is another ungraded activity where no matter what students answer, it will appear as correct in the report; the difference lies in that students have to type the answer).
  • You can mix the type of activities you include in a same quiz. For example, you can create a quiz using only multiple choice and checkbox activities, or you can have a multiple choice for the first question, but the rest questions including openen ended activities. This is because after you created your first question, you will find icons for all the activity types listed above (these icons will appear right under the question you created). If you don't remember what icon stand for, you can visualize their names by just placing the cursor on the icons.
Let's see how to work with the "multiple choice" type
  • Once you click on the multiple choice icon, a white box called "question 1" will appear.
  • You can type your question/instruction on the first big rectangle (where it says "write your question here"). If you want, you can add a picture or a math equation (in case these are relevant for your purpose), or your instruction may consist of only an image/equation (that is to say, you don't need to write anything on the big rectangle).
  •  You can add the picture by clicking on the symbol that reads "image" next to the big rectangle previously mentioned. To upload it from your device click on the green and white “plus” symbol and select an image. Click on "done" and your image will be added (notice that on the right side of the screen a preview of your question is going to be shown). Or you can type the link to your image on the rectangle that reads "enter or paste a link to an image".
  • Regarding the answers, Quizizz will automatically show four blank spaces for your answers, but you don't necessarilly need to write four answers. If you need more answers, click on "add answer option" and another blank space will show.
  • You will notice that next to each answer box there is a "tick" symbol. Click on the tick that is next to your correct answer (Remember, it can only be one).
  • Your answers can consist of text and/or images. (In one answer just text or images, but you can have, for example, answer 1 as a text, answer 2 as an image, and so on).
  • To add an image in your answers you have to click on the image symbol next to the answer blank space, and follow the same steps as in the question box.
  • Finally, you can change the time limit for this question by clicking on the "30 seconds" button that appears on the bottom left side of your screen. Click on "save" so as to finish your first question.
  • Once you finished the first question, if you happen to need to change something just click on the button that reads "edit" and the same screen than before will appear.
  • If you want to delete the question, just click on the trashcan icon.
  • And if you need a pretty similar question, you can click on the icon that is in between the edit and trashcan buttons. If you click that icon, you will duplicate your question, so you would only have to change a few things.
What about the other activity types?

Well, the process to create them is pretty similar, so this section will not concentrate so much into details, but only on distinctive aspects.
  •  checkbox:
    • you have to include an instruction (text, text and image/equation, image/equation).
    • you can check as "correct" one or more answers.
    • to change the time limit click on "45 seconds" in the left corner.
    • students have to click on the amount of answers they consider appropiate, and then click on "submit" to go on with the quiz.
  • fill-in-the-blank:
    • you have to include an instruction (text, text and image/equation, image/equation).
    • you can include only one answer or more.
    • with a free/basic account, you are only allowed to ask students to fill in with the EXACT same answer. What do I mean with exact? The answer you provide, and the one provided by the student have to include the same punctuation marks, the same spelling, and even capitalize the same letters. I would suggest you to add as many "alternative answers" as possible to include all the variations in punctuation, spelling, capitalization that your stundets may choose (taking into account that they are in the "correct" spectrum.
    • notice that all the options you provide are "correct" and that they are textual answers.
    • to edit the time limit click on "60 seconds" in the left corner of the screen.
  •  poll:
    • you have to include an instruction (text, text and image/equation, image/equation).
    • you have to provide at least 2 options.
    • answers can consists of text or images.
    • students can pick one or more options. To allow students to pic more than an option, click on "allow multiple selection" below the question box. (if you choose this option, make sure to tell your students that they have to click on "submit" after selecting all of their answers).
    • to edit the time limit click on "30 seconds" in the left corner of the screen.
    • remember this activity is ungraded, so whatever your students choose will be considered correct.
  • open ended activity:
    • you ONLY have to include an instruction (text, text and image/equation, image/equation).
    • whatever your student decides to type in answer to your question will be acknoledged as correct.
    • to edit the time limit click on "3 minutes" in the left corner of the screen
-->To include images, edit, delete or duplicate these activities, you have to follow the same procedure explained on the "multiple choice" section.

-->Once you finished your quiz, click on the button on the top right of your screen that reads "publish".  You'll be asked to fill some information regarding your quiz. You can add a "title image" that will be shown when people access your quiz (this step is optional). You will have to select alanguage, the grades the quiz is aimed for, and decide who can view your quiz (visible to everyone, visible only to yourself, or advanced options). Click on "save" and your quiz will be waiting for you to give it some use!

Subscribe to my blog to know how to "give some use" to your quiz! I will be uploading information about it soon.
